Description of Pilgrim tour from Kutaisi

Trip Route: Kutaisi – Vardzia – Akhaltsikhe – Katskhi – Kutaisi

DAY-BY-DAY EXPERIENCES

Day 1 – Arrive in Batumi

Arrival and Meeting in Kutaisi airport.
Transfer to the hotel. Check in.
Overnight in Kutaisi.

Day 2 – Kutaisi city tour

Breakfast in the hotel. Sightseeing tour in Kutaisi.

• First Stop in Holy Virgin Gelati Monastery built by David IV the Builder in 1106 and become his burial vault. Monastery is a world cultural heritage since 1994.
• Furthermore comes Motsameta monastery (Monastery of St. David and Konstantin) – one of the famous sight not only Kutaisi but the whole Georgia. Monastery was constructed on mountain, where Georgian dukes David and Konstantin Mkheidze who refused to accept the Islam were executed by Muslim invaders. Magnificent temple and monastery “Motsameta” was founded here in XI century, which means “martyrs” in honor of princes David and Konstantine who are ranked as saints of Georgia Church.
• Then follows Bagrat Temple built in the reign of Bagrat III, as a main temple of united Georgian Kingdom and consecrated in honor of Assumption of Virgin in 1003.

Day 3 – Tour to Katskhi and Mgvimevi monasteries

Breakfast in the hotel. Moving to excursion:

• Katskhi the place which burn into memory leaving indelible impression, when visit Katskhi for the first time you want to come back here and to feel unheard trembling and wonderful unity with God. 40 meter high monolith stone column elevates on sky and earth boundary crowned by Katskhi Holy-Ascension church. Old stronghold belief is truly unique. Monastery Complex Katskhi Sveti is an example of gorgeous fortress and living worldly vanity.
• Mgvimevi monastery – less known place look like cave town Vardzia. Similarity can be explained by the fact that eristav Rati Kakhaberidze who founded Mgvimevi monastery was taking participation in decorating of cave town Vardzia a little is known about monastery, but it is known that monastery was built in the rule of the powerful queen Tamara. Nunnery of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin is the rare type of cave monastery. Going up on narrow stairs which leads to the main gate through black tunnel you will get in a big cave, where monastery temple is situated. It is a unique and single cave temple which is not cavated in rock, doesn’t have classic rectangular form and is placed in the cave without shape. The part of cave is occupied by stallagmite right in the right part of altar

Day 4 – Tour to Vardzia and Rabati fortress

Breakfast in the  hotel. Moving to excutsion Vardzia and Rabat fortress.

• First stop in the main sight of Georgia – cave complex of Vardzia. Modern city Vardzia – it was an invisible fortress and a refuge from the constant raids of barbarians, suffers from earthquakes many times and from invaders – the Persians and the Turks. Dozen churches, libraries, bath-house, sewage system and longish gismol were constructed in cave town in ancient times. The caves are deepening in the rock, in height count eight stages.
• Next stop is Fortress Rabati – an ancient stone fortress is a cultural part of the city of Akhaltsikhe. The city was founded in IX century AD and initially consists of three parts: residential area, fortress and citadel. Fortress was surrounded by three strong walls and was connected to local areas by tunnels. Palace, tower, internal patios with pools and fountains, enfilade, small garden-labyrinth are located within city wall.

Day 5 – Tour to Dadiani Palace in Zugdidi

Breakfast in the hotel. Departure to Zugdidi.
Today we will travel to Colchis lowland and will visit Megrelia possessions duke’s of Dadiani, winter residence. Present Palace was lifted up in 1873-78 for Princess Ekaterina Dadiani. In the palace we will be able to have a walk in imperial mansion and to see more than 40000 exhibit item, among with the works of western-European artists, ancient icons, antiquities and death-mask of Napoleon, holy shroud of Virgin Mary, which is presented to public view only on great holy tide. This unique antiquity was brought from Byzantium in XV century. There is a botanic garden with rare plants and trees, some of them are single prototype on Eurasian continent.
