One of the first followers of the monk Shio was Evagrius, who owned the fortress of Tsikhedidi to the south behind Kura. Once he went to the mountains to hunt and saw Shio there. He decided to stay with him, sold all his possessions, distributed to the poor and became a monk. The very first building is the Church of John the Baptist, around 560-580.
The cruciform church is simple and strict in its design. In addition, the caves dug by monks and now visible around the monastery and along the road leading to the monastery complex are also included.
