Metekhi Church

Metekhi ChurchThe Church of the assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located in the village of Metekhi, in the Kaspian municipality of the Shida Kartli region. The building is mentioned from the XII-XIII century, but during the reign of Vakhtang Gorgasali on this site was located another, smaller Church.

Metekhi Church is distinguished by a rather unique dome, slightly different from the usual architectural forms in Georgia. Currently, restoration work is underway inside. Interestingly, inside the temple there is a small pit and the qvevri jars. Though for what exactly there are jugs, for water or wine, now it is difficult to tell. On the façade of the Church remained the inscription, which refers to a feudal Lord and politician Kartli, Itama Amilakhvari. According to the chronicle, which has survived it is known that Iotam Amilahvari participated in the restoration Of the Church of the assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

In the Church there are burials of local feudal lords and famous figures. Only on these burials it is possible to tell that the Church was quite famous in the last centuries.

The domed Church is built of well-treated basalt blocks and has two entrances. The fence (60 x 70 m, wall thickness 0.7 m), composed of broken stone, and the towers belong to the late feudal period. The bell tower was built in the XIX century.
