Ancient stone church of Saint Maria – Anchiskhati Church is preserved in an old city and is active for today. It was built by heritor of Vakhtang Gorgasali Dachi Udjarmeli in VI century. Beautiful rectangular building was constructed under influence of ancient Palestinian architecture. Doors of Anchiskhati are decorated with traditional Georgian cross made by Saint Nino. On the west front face of church Anchiskhati on the stone there is a cut out medallion with cross preserved since time. The upper part and arch are transformed during XVII-XIX century.
Its new name church received in XVII century – church of the Nationalist of the Virgin Mary when big icon was brought here from Anchiskhati Cathedral Temple (South Georgia). The Holy Saviors Image icon one of the supreme sanctuary of Georgia. In XVII private owners had passed icons of The Nationalist of the Virgin Mary to the church in Tbilisi. Here icon rest for 200 years. In the end of XIX century icon was stored in Church Museum. Today Anchian Icon (on Georgian Anchiskhati) is located in exposition of Museum of Art of Georgia.
