Silk Museum

Silk MuseumState Silk Museum was founded in Tbilisi in 1887 by famous specialist and researcher of the silk Nikolai Shavrov. Tbilisi Silk Museum is famous by its unique collection. It consists of more than 5000 sort and species of pods, silkworm and butterfly. Besides that there are exponents of everything concern silk production: samples of mulberry family, natural and synthetic dye, production from silk and many more. Museum is offering to its guest’s collection of different countries. There silk production muzey-shelkatraditions are preserved. Some of collection were completed by founder of the museum Shavrov. Other were gifted from colleagues and friends from Russia and Europe.

Exposition will be interesting for those who want to discover history of silk and regarding its natural production. In museum they are breeding their own warms silkworms and it is allowed to feed them with leaf of mulberry origin source of silk chrysalis and as a result they transform to silk thread. Feeding is conducting when mulberry leaves are soft and fresh from April up to June. You can buy real silk pod per less than a quarter of dollar.

The building of silk museum itself is city sight. And is the bright example of architecture of 19 century in Tbilisi. It is in a list of national monuments of Georgia. Outside and inside design combine classic elements, gothic style and Islamic art. Many visitors are outlining appearance with interior elements such as mulberry leaf, pod, butterfly chrysalis and silkworm.
