There are many ways to have fun in Tbilisi – to go sightseeing of Tbilisi, to walk in narrow streets of Tbilisi, but if you are visiting Tbilisi with kids, the best place to you is Tbilisi Zoo. Tbilisi Zoo was founded in 1927 and cared over many difficulties especially flood in 2015. Tbilisi Zoo is the most exotic Park of Tbilisi. Here you will meet many inhabitants of local fauna as well as animals from the different parts of the World – majestic white lions, Asian elephants, white hornbill and many more. In collection of Tbilisi zoo you will meet different kinds of birds – African penguins, different kinds of pheasant, lordly bird of prey and peafowl’s in love with themselves. Along with that you will have an opportunity to visit colorful fishes, venomous snake and reptile. There are 800 kinds of animals in Tbilisi Zoo and the endangered ones.
Tbilisi Zoo History
Society of ambulance service of Caucasus was functioned in the beginning of 20th century. Society was caring about wild animals but don’t have any status of Zoological Park. History of Tbilisi Zoo is starting from February 10th of 1927 when Executive Committee of Tbilisi city parliament founded Zoological Park on 70 hectare in Vera ravine. The first director of the Zoo was G.A. Henson.
Initially following units were included:
- Caucasian or local animals
- Soviet Union Fauna
- Exotic animals
- Food-producing animals
Zoological museum and parasitological laboratory was founded in 1931.
Biological station was added to Tbilisi Zoo under the authority of I. Djandie which further in 1938 was transferred to TSU. Supplier of wild animals was “Zoo centre”, branches where located in the different parts of Soviet Union. The famous founder of animals’ physiology school in Georgia, academic Ivan Beritashvili who conduct science on primates worked in Tbilisi Zoo.
As the years goes by there were many changes conducted in Tbilisi Zoo and was changed seriously generally the structure of the Zoo.
At the moment following department are functioning:
- Varmints’ and primitive rodent
- Birds
- Cloven-footed
- Exotarrium (reptiles, amphibian and fishes
- Educational Centre for Kids
Zoo is working daily including holidays. Working time schedule:
1st of March to 1st of May: from 10-00 to 19-00
1st May – 1st June: from 10-00 to 20-00.
1st June-20 of August: с 10-00 до 21-00.
20 August up to 1st of October: from 10-00 to 20-00.
1st of October to 1st of December: from 10-00 to 19-00.
1st of December to 1st of March: from 10-00 to 18-00.
Entrance ticket:
- Up to 3 year – for free
- From 3 up to 12 year – 1 GEL
- From 12 year – 2 GEL
- For people with special needs entrance is free (require to supply relevant document)
